Is a Florida Marriage License Required?

Yes, a Florida marriage license is required to get married anywhere in Florida: Whether it’s on the beach, on a lake, in a church, in a park, in a friend’s backyard, and yes, even on a boat (if you’re within 3 geographical miles from the coastline).

Here’s what you’ll need to bring with you?

Identification- Both of you must bring a picture ID. It can be a driver’s license, state ID, military ID or a valid passport. You may also be asked to show a certified copy of your birth certificate.

If you’re a U.S. citizen you must provide your social security number. If you’re not a U.S. citizen you must provide proof of an alien registration.

Proof of Age: You must be 18 years of age. There are special circumstances in which a minor can marry in the state of Florida. Please check with the county clerk’s office where you are applying for more details.

Money-  The fee for a Florida marriage license is $93.50.  If you’re a Florida resident and you complete a premarital preparation course, your fee can be reduced to $61.00. Please note: Fees and rules can be subject to change, always check with the county clerk’s office before applying.

Show up in person- Both of you must be present to apply, sign the application, and take an oath that you have given correct information.

You probably have more questions:

Is a blood test required?
No, Florida does not require a blood test for couples getting married.

Is there a waiting period?

Yes and No…
If you’re a non-resident of Florida, there is no waiting period. If you’re a Florida resident and have completed the premarital prep course within the last 12 months of your application, there is no wait. If you don’t take the course, there is  a 3 day waiting period.

How long is the marriage license valid?
Your license is valid for 60 days from the effective date of the license.

Who can marry us?

Any ordained clergy, public notaries of the state, judicial officers (this includes retired judicial officers) and Clerks of the Circuit Courts. If you have questions about that, please refer to the county clerk’s office where you are applying for your Florida marriage license.
If you’re in a rush to tie the knot or on a low budget, a deputy clerk can marry you right at the court house (for a fee; usually about $30.00).

Will Florida issue a marriage license for couples of the same sex?
No, not at this time.
